Preservation Should Be Accessible

Updated: 1 day ago

Preserving your family archive does not have to be expensive. There are many basic steps you can take at home, along with free or low-cost resources available in your community.

Start by looking for free local resources. This may take some searching, and you may not find everything in one place, but many helpful options do exist.

Libraries, cultural centers, and creative arts spaces often offer access to scanners and equipment for digitizing materials. Local historical societies, genealogy centers, churches, resettlement agencies, and community centers are especially valuable — and often, the more specific the center, the more helpful it can be. These places can help build context for items in your archive, connect you with your culture, and introduce you to others doing the same work.

Do not overlook personal and informal sources. Talk to older family members, ask questions, and take notes. Treat the process like detective work — small conversations and discoveries often provide the most meaningful context for your archive.
